  1. What is a chest drain and what does it do?

It is a tube made of plastic that is placed in the surgical area after the surgery. It is used to remove air and fluid that has accumulated in your chest cage after surgery and is harmful to remain there.

2. When is the drain removed?

After the surgery, the drain must be stopped until your lungs are in their best condition and the air and fluid coming from the inside decreases. The decision to remove the drain is made by your operating physician.

3. Why Coughing, Walking and Lung Rehabilitation is Important 

Walking is very important for maintaining circulation and muscle functions in our body: When we remain immobile for a long time after surgery, clots may form in the legs and cause complications.

No air coming from your operated lung Your operated lung will fully recover and fill your ribcage. You can usually be discharged within hours after your drain is removed. The painkillers you will use at home will be prescribed to you by your doctor.

You can travel by plane after leaving the hospital. Be sure to keep your epicrisis with you within the first 3 months after discharge.

6. When Should I Have My Stitches Removed?

You must come for a polyclinic check-up on the 10th day after discharge. You can apply for an appointment via MHRS from the relevant service physicians.
